Tenants Oppose Plan to Shame Landlords

Pittsburgh’s City Council has passed a “shame” bill designed to embarrass landlords.

According to local news, officials plan to erect signs directed at landlords who own the city’s top 10 most-dilapidated properties as a way to shame them into making improvements. Under the measure, city officials are tasked with compiling and maintaining that list.

However, not everyone is on board. According to the report, one councilman opposed the original measure because all of the signs would have been placed at the rental properties, which would only humiliate tenants, many of whom told him they did not want the measure to pass.

As a last minute concession, councilmembers agreed to have the signs placed in front of the landlord’s own homes if the landlord lives locally, according to the report.
