Landlord Quick Tip #250

Tip #250:  Bursting at the Seams When you are deciding on the rules that you want your tenants to follow, include something about storage. With renters’ active lifestyles,  properties can quickly be overrun with everything from jogging strollers to bikes and other sports equipment.  Also, you may come across tenants who are struggling to downsize,  and bursting at the seams with their excess possessions. It is very important that these items do not wind up in common areas like hallways, stairwells, laundry rooms or other handy spaces. Improper storage is a safety hazard.  It can impede escape in the case of fire, damage the building and even spread bedbugs. It’s also the telltale sign of a hoarder.  In that case, it’s easier to manage the situation if the rules cover storage. To the extent possible, provide appropriate storage spaces for tenants, and inspect the property routinely to catch any violators — even if it’s just for a few hours a day.
