Tip#77: No Dress Rehearsals
Fair housing authorities are quite serious about their work.
An investigative technique that is quite popular with the enforcement crowd is to stage an interview between a landlord and a “tester”, an investigator posing as an applicant. Maybe they are pretending to have a particular religious affiliation or to be a person with a disability. Or, maybe they look just like the sort of candidate you want to rent to – and confide in. Either way, you can count on the fact that this “applicant” is trained and knows exactly what they are doing.
Landlords can never ask discriminatory questions, regardless of who they believe they are interviewing.
