Landlord Quick Tip

Tip #213: It Never Hurts to Ask

The first time you speak with a renter about a vacancy, it’s important to ask some questions.  One very important question to include is, “When are you planning to move?”

It’s easy to assume that candidates are contacting you because they are looking for a place to live — in the immediate future. But you can’t take that for granted.

In the summertime especially, students may be thinking about fall housing, while other renters are taking a look at the competition before they negotiate to renew their current leases.

If you don’t ask a candidate about their timeline, you may be faced with the frustrating question,”Can you hold it open for me — for a couple of months?”
