Landlord Owes $300,000 for Failing to Register Rental

A Miami landlord has been assessed over $300,000 by the city for failing to get a rental permit.

According to a news report, the landlord was assessed the extra penalties after he failed to pay the original $250 assessment.

The landlord told reporters that he was unaware of the fine for months because he did not receive notice.

Officials said they delivered notice of the earlier assessment to the five-unit rental property. The landlord said none of the tenants told him about a notice. Service of the notice is typically made in person, according to the report.

A city official said other property owners have had similar assessments accumulate into the millions of dollars.

According to the report, the landlord intends to appeal.
