Is It a Crime to Evict Seniors?

A group of San Francisco tenants, many senior citizens, have filed a criminal complaint over their pending evictions.

A civil rights attorney representing the group says that evicting the tenants under the Ellis Act provisions, which allow rental property owners to take regulated rentals out of service, amounts to elder abuse, according to a news report.

The attorney told reporters that the action could leave many seniors homeless, to face health issues and even death.

He and about 30 others have filed complaints calling for a criminal investigation, according to the report.

Market rents in San Francisco have increased sharply in recent months, with many attributing the trend to more high-paid tech professionals driving up competition for housing.

The city’s District Attorney told reporters his office will review the complaints to determine whether any crimes are being committed.
